Upgrading the R56 Aisin automatic gearbox (or manual conversion)

After having a play in Old Rattler, I need moar powers. I'm looking to strengthen the engine appropriately but the slushbox is going to be the weak link. A manual conversion would be the ideal answer but after looking into this, it seems like it would be a huge project as even after the mechanical swap, a lot of the electronics would need to be recoded and cruise control amongst other nice-to-haves may no longer work. Another alternative would be to strengthen the autobox and have it uprated to align with the new mods. Does anyone know of any reputable companies that could be capable of such a task?

Going auto wasn't a particular choice for me. Since having it, I'd consider going back to manual but it'd only be hooning.. auto just does everything else better IMHO

I think you're better off pushing the auto to the limits and be the guy that goes "yeah it's auto but it fucking goes like hell". Worst case is you blow the box up... then you can either rebuild or convert it then!

If it isn't broke, there is no need to fix it...

We're on the same page there Lewis. I love the auto, but for a weekend hoon the manual is in a different league. Unfortunately, I still need to use my car for commuting as well, and the aftermarket clutch on the manual car would be horrible on the M25 crawl.

I've phoned around a number of autobox specialists over lunch and sadly Paul is right; the bottom line is the Aisin box cannot be upgraded. It's worth flushing the box with new fluid but that's about all I can do. They did mention that the Aisin box was pretty robust though and used on a number of larger cars (e.g. Volvo) yet he hadn't heard of many cases of them going tits up. I'd be looking at £1500-£2000 to fix/replace it with OEM parts :eek:uch:

Now that 1320 are looking likely to push into the 12s at the pod, the only option left for me will be to have the 'fastest (and only?!) R56 auto down the strip'!

Is it wrong for an auto to have cams and forged internals?! Will the ECU/autobox even allow me to rev past 6.5k and hold it there?! Questions I'm currently stuck pondering over..

I do the M25 daily. In my R50, I just wanted to go so I didn't fuck up my clutch any more I did the rest of the car.

I wonder if all the R55/6/7/8/9/60 auto models share the same g'box in petrol and Derv? Kind of a relief if it was!

Mate, go for the fastest auto R56 record! You probably have it right now anyway!

IIRC, the ECU on LCI cars is very difficult to break in to... but the PSA cars (mine :D) are not as difficult... ?

Dont forget that the GM powerglide was introuduced in the 1950s to sit behind 200hp 283 cu in Chevrolet's and now you'll find them at every dragstrip around the world having 2500hp go through them.........there's always a weak spot somewhere in a system.....maybe you will find it maybe you wont.....One thing for sure it should be really consitant at the Pod :)

Ooo imagine a Mini with a Powerglide Transmission... would be beating your R56 12sec runs!

Now that 1320 are looking likely to push into the 12s at the pod, the only option left for me will be to have the 'fastest (and only?!) R56 auto down the strip'! .
Here is your benchmark:

"Currently Robert Campisi from Australia holds the World Record for the fastest run using a Powerglide transmission, clocking 5.95s at 260 mph in his Twin Turbo Ford Mustang in September 2011"

The biggest problem is launch I've read that the F56 comes with launch control. Sitting at 700 rpm really kills you 0-100km times also torque is limited in the first two gears. Best I've achieved is 6.5sec measure by VBOX(with runflates, tow hitch and me at 100kg's)and no I wasn't game to floor it with my foot on the brake to see how that would help. Maybe a tuner can do a software flash to over come those two things. I've always wondered how Evolves JCW turbo 290hp remap would go on an auto.

Not an R56 but my R53 S auto (same box)is presently running 15% pulley, air tech IC, Dave f, obx manifold, scorpion with decat and I will be fitting head, cam and 550s at the end of the month and Then off to 1320 for mapping which will include the gearbox being mapped to reduce shift times, I drag it as often as poss, I drive it hard and had no issues

Bigger turbo not necessarily the answer, some guys on here have made good power on the stock MCS and JCW turbos. Yeah, foot on brake and bring up the revs. As luctrash said 2-2.5k revs seems to work best. I did try going higher but the ECU threw a fit after holding it at that level and went into limp mode. My turbo kicks in shortly after 2k.

I have log boost up to 21.5 psi using the android torque app and would imagine at 2000rpm tractions going to be a major problem. Even for me coming out of a roundabout in third gear I can spin the wheels easily.

Can I ask how you measured you 0-100 time. I've used the torque app but it is not accurate and is inconsistant compeared to VBOX.

I run a JCW turbo with an Evolve stage 2 remap. I have used the portable vbox receiver with iphone app to measure. The time to 62 mph was something like 6.03 and to 60 mph 5.9...something don't remember exactly. I don't own the vbox so my other readings are with the torque app which is inconsistent, I have seen from 5.5 to 7.2 sec using torque.
